If you’ve visited Newfoundland and Labrador, you are likely aware that the province is rich in raw natural beauty – from vast seascapes to isolated beaches, it is a playground for those who enjoy getting off of the beaten path. A little-known treasure in Eastern Newfoundland, which is easily accessible from the main centre of St. John’s, is Bell Island. Bell Island is a small, inhabited, island of approximately 2000 residents, located just 5 km off the coast of the main island of Newfoundland. Accessible via a short, 20-minute ferry ride across the strait (locally referred to as “the Tickle”) the island is just 9.5 km long and 3.5 km wide. From a historical perspective, Bell Island played a significant global role in the production of iron ore, which was essential during World War II. Sadly, merchant ore freighters at anchor near Bell Island were attacked by a German U-Boat in 1942, resulting in the loss of four ships and more than 60 people. Evidence of Bell Island’s history is clearly evident to this day touring the island, and guests will have an opportunity to explore and learn about this special place.

Our Bell Island Hiking Adventure is a full-day hike, rated Easy to Moderate. During the hike we will have an opportunity to see towering sea stacks, exposed cliffs, and isolated beaches. At times, guests may spot Humpback or Minke whales breach and play just offshore of the island. Because of the physical terrain, the steep cliffs are ideal as a safe breeding site for a variety of sea bird species, particularly Black Guillemots and Starlings.

One of the main attractions of the hike is a visit to Grebes Nest, regarded by many as the main tourist attraction on the island. Grebes Nest contains two abandoned fishing covers that are connected by a man-made tunnel. This tunnel was once used to help with loading and unloading of fish and supplies. Getting to Grebes Nest involves scaling down a rock covered hill to the beach below. Awaiting you is a giant sea stack and the sound of powerful waves crashing against the shoreline. Once at ocean side you will see a tunnel that cuts through the mountain side and allows passage to Grebes Nest. Were it not for this man-made tunnel, Grebes Nest would not be accessible by foot. Once through the tunnel, you will experience towering rock walls on three sides, with the ocean bordering the fourth side. This is truly a unique and awe-inspiring experience, and we are excited to offer this excursion for the 2023 season.

Notes:

As weather is highly variable in Eastern Newfoundland, clients must ensure that they take appropriate waterproof and insulating clothing and footwear. Hiking boots are required, and gaiters are highly recommended. There are times when the ferry is unable to access the island due to poor weather conditions. This is a possibility both heading to and departing from Bell Island. In the event the weather forecast indicates conditions that may cause ferry disruptions, particularly returning from the island, we will advise guest at least 2-hours before departure and offer the option of a reschedule, cancelation or alternative coastal hike on the same day.
