Summary: 

Introduction to GPS Navigation is designed to provide the basic skills and knowledge to use handheld GPS units in terrestrial settings. Our focus will be on Garmin GPSMAP line, but those who use other models such as Etrek will also benefit from this program. Students will have an opportunity to practice skills outside and are encouraged to bring a personal GPS unit. Units will be provided if required for practice. This course is suitable for beginners, or those looking to refresh their skills and knowledge.

Class Ratio: 12 participants:1 Instructor. Minimum 4 participants required to run program.

Learning outcomes:

-       General set up of Garmin handheld GPS units

-       Configuration, Pages, and Menus

-       Datums, Projections & Coordinate Systems

-       Creating waypoints, routes & tracks

-       Data Uploading and Downloading using GPX files from Mac or PC

-       Using BaseCamp software to plan and organize data.

-       Navigation and data collection in the field

-       Integrating topographic maps and GPS for greater accuracy

-       Field exercises
